Rockaway with Pat Campagnola

Pat Campagnola, head coach of 10th Planet Springfield, MA, shows us the rockaway, a highly effective blood choke technique.

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu burst onto the scene in 2003, changing the face of grappling in the USA. The no gi system founded by Eddie Bravo has now spread across the world and has its very own culture that sets apart any 10th Planet from other Jiu Jitsu academies.

Veteran 10th Planet brown belt Pat Campagnola of 10th Planet Springfield, MA, is leading the charge in New England. Here he shares the rockaway, a strong submission from the back that your opponent won’t see coming.

The rockaway starts from having your opponent’s back. You begin by attacking the rear triangle. After you grab your shin with both hands and begin to lean back, your opponent is going to defend through desperation by trapping your ankle. This stops you finishing the rear triangle. If they don’t do this, then you can finish the triangle.

You then pull on your shin, as though you are trying to finish the triangle, using it to sit yourself up and balancing on your base. The hand that was by your knee then comes around your opponent’s head, to the inside of their neck, as high up on your shin as you can get it. You then anchor into your shin, plant your elbow down and lean back into it, creating a really tight blood choke. If you do not get high enough up on your shin with your hand, there is too much space to finish the rockaway.
