Meet Joe Laws: upcoming boxer with a hunger for greatness.
Joe Laws embodies British boxing. Known as the “Benwell Bomber”, the 24 year old is walking a path set out by countless fighters before him. Fighting in the super welterweight division, Joe has made an impact on the scene with 3 KOs from 3 fights.
Joe was born in the Benwell neighbourhood of Newcastle, England in 1994. He started boxing aged 13 to stay fit, but it soon became a consuming passion. He comes from a line of boxers, with his father, brother and grandfather having stepped in the ring before him.
He still lives in his neighbourhood, despite its rough reputation, it is home to Joe. It’s where his friends and family are. Joe started boxing at Grainger Park Boy’s Club, and feels that the tough streets of Benwell shaped him into the man and fighter he is today.
His love for his home doesn’t stop him from dreaming of bigger things and is aiming for the highest peaks of the boxing world. Joe Laws fought for Birtley ABC, where he had 50 fights as an amateur. He made the ABA finals, boxed for England and had trials for Team GB. With the full confidence of his Birtley coach Graeme Rutherford, Joe recently started his professional career.
His debut in July this year saw him defeat Sylwester Walczak in the fourth round at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland. His bone-crunching left hook to the the body of his second opponent James Gorman stopped the Irishman from coming back out for a second round at Rainton Meadows Arena. Joe shone in his most recent fight on Eddie Hearn’s promotion at Newcastle Arena, putting Chris Truman down twice in the fourth round to secure a hard fought victory and continue his ascent to the top tiers of boxing.
