Colin Byrne Jab Counter Takedown

Colin Byrne of Shinobi MMA shares a simple, yet effective jab counter takedown.

For those in the know, Colin ‘Serpico Ninja’ Byrne requires no introduction.  Originally from Dublin, Ireland, Colin is the head coach at Shinobi MMA Academy in Lagos, Portugal.  Colin works with the highest level of competitors and coaches, such as SBG’s coach John Kavanagh, Mjolnir’s Gunnar Nelson and the Notorious Conor McGregor.

Colin has practiced Ninjutsu since 1997, BJJ with John Kavanagh since 2002 and trained and fought in Thailand.  He is an MMA specialist with an incredible wealth of knowledge that he passes on to serious fighters and those starting their journey alike.  If you are lucky enough to train with Colin, your game will never be the same again.  Shinobi is a mecca for MMA practitioners looking to focus in an exclusive facility without the distractions that come with being in a large gym.  Colin is also the film-maker and photographer for The Mac Life.

Here Colin waits for his opponent to throw a jab, parrying it down with his right.  From here, he reaches around his opponent’s torso with his left arm.  At the same time, Colin threads his right arm under his opponent’s lead thigh, making sure to keep their arm trapped.  This sets up ta strong single-leg takedown.  Importantly, Colin gets into a front rack position as though squatting, meaning that he can easily lift his opponent using his legs, rather than trying to use his back strength alone.

This jab counter takedown is simple, yet highly effective. It allows for a grappler to take a striker to the ground with ease, without costing them too much getting in close to their opponent.  It is the perfect way to immediately close ground and get in tight without absorbing any damage.
