Butterfly Body Lock by Scott Epstein of 10th Planet

The Butterfly Body Lock is the fourth in our series of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu techniques with Scott “Einstein” Epstein.

Join Einstein in the 10P Lab for his demonstration of the Butterfly Body Lock. As part of our Videos from the Vault collection, this 13 part series will focus on 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu techniques with Scott Epstein of 10th Planet West LA.

Scott is the only third degree Blackbelt under Eddie Bravo in the 10th planet Jiu Jitsu system. The ever-growing and always-evolving grappling system was developed by Eddie Bravo for MMA. Scott is the founder of 10th Planet West Los Angeles, one of the most famous locations in the 10th Planet network. He has been grappling for 19 years with a brief professional MMA career in which he won all his fights from submission. He has had a superb professional grappling career, with multiple wins at well-known tournaments. He was also Chuck Liddell’s Jiu Jitsu and strength coach, as well as Jiu Jitsu coach for team Liddell on Ultimate fighter season 11.

The butterfly body lock starts from having your opponent’s back. As is normal in this situation, your opponent will likely push himself up to defend, making it almost impossible to choke them because your hands are too high. Swing the left leg behind and hook it behind your opponent’s upper leg behind the knee, before flipping it up, putting them on their side. At the same time, you need to put your right leg across their body, then tuck it behind your left leg, as you would for a triangle, with the left foot tucked behind your opponent’s leg. Now you can control your opponents hips while putting the choke in. If you are being hurt by their hip bone, you can readjust and go back to the choke.
