Arnold Allen MMA Tutorial pt2

In this second Arnold Allen MMA Tutorial, the UFC featherweight shows us a great counter to the single leg takedown and follows on from part 1.

The 24 year old British fighter, hailing from Felixstowe in Suffolk, formerly of BKK Fighters in Colchester now trains at the world-renowned Tristar Gym in Montreal, home to a veritable who’s who of MMA talent. Allen has an impressive record of 13 – 1, with four wins from four fights in the UFC. He beat “Mr Finland” Makwan Amirkhani in 2017 and submitted Mads Burnell with a front choke in UFC Fight night 130 this year.

While Allen comes from a striking background, his grappling game is excellent, with two of his four UFC victories coming by way of submission. Filmed by Alex Wright at BKK Fighters, this Arnold Allen MMA Tutorial sees the young fighter demonstrating how to turn a single leg takedown to your advantage.

As your opponent comes in for the takedown, taking hold of your lead leg, you need to base out with the rear leg and post your hand on your opponent’s inside elbow. Your rear arm then threads through between your opponent’s head and your body. This stops their forward momentum and prevents the double leg takedown. It also sets up for the counter. As your opponent completes the single leg takedown, you take your left arm that is posted and put it through the back of your opponent legs, flipping them over with you, giving you their back.

From here, you should have their right arm trapped under the leg they were taking, allowing you to trap their other arm with your left hand. You need to stop their hip from coming up with your free leg also. Your right arm should be in a collar bar, ready for the choke. Then, you need to quickly whip out your left hand and complete the choke to submit your opponent.
